WHY IS A MEDAL SO IMPORTANT TO AN ATHLETE?

For all competitive or non-competitive sports, every medal tells a story. Ask any athlete around, a medal is a piece of glory that we all share as one. Having the medal placed around your neck, we share a common experience and a common success. A medal recognizes you for the hours of work, the self-discipline, the time management, and the grit during all your training and during the sport when everything does not go as planned, like unexpected body conditions.
We at MedaLAB Malaysia have designed up to thousands of medals for different sports, such as marathons, cycling rides, taekwondo, gymnastics, badminton, boxing, e-sports, and many more. Based on our vast experience in different sports industries, we have come up with top 3 tips for anyone who is interested to design a custom made medal for their event.

TIP # 1 - IDENTIFY THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS TO HAVE ON YOUR MEDAL

The first and also the most important point to consider when designing a custom made medal is to identify important elements to have on your medal. Below are the 9 most common elements:
  • Event Name
  • Event Year/Date
  • Event Logo
  • Event Distance (for marathons/cycling rides)
  • Categories
  • Sponsor name/logo
  • Organizer name/logo
  • Event Tagline / special message
  • Special elements (icon, building, characters and etc)
There is no fixed answer as to which elements are the most important, how many elements maximum a medal should have. This will be based on your event requirement.
Refer to the 2 examples below to get a better idea on the elements on a MedaLAB medal:

TIP # 2 - BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR MEDAL SHAPES!

A custom medal can be made of different shapes. it can follow the shape of an animal, cartoon character, building, object, event logo, or anything you can possibly think of. So, think out of the box when you are designing your event medal.

TIP # 3 - CHOOSE THE RIGHT MEDAL FINISHING COATING

There is a common misconception that a gold medal is made of gold material, silver medal is made of silver material and vice-versa. In general, up to 90% of the custom made medals in the market including MedaLAB, are made of the material called Zinc Alloy. It’s a strong, durable and cost effective alloy material that is highly suitable to make medals.
The different colour medal you see (gold, silver, bronze, brass and etc) is actually different kind of medal finishing coating. Below are some of the most common finishing.
Your medal finishing coating should be based on your medal design, and also the general feeling you want the medal to have. The most common type of finishing, the antique silver finishing give people the metal feeling. A shine gold/silver/bronze medal brings out the classy sense of the event. Trial and error when designing your medal is the best way to get your desired outcome.
